Product Review
AIYIMA S4000
Compact powered speakers with Bluetooth, balanced inputs, remote control and a subwoofer output. Their complete connectivity is inexpensive, but large response deviations, distortion and limited output constrain accurate playback.
Overview
AIYIMA is a China-based audio brand offering amplifiers and powered speakers. The S4000 is a powered stereo desktop speaker pair with a 4-inch woofer, horn-loaded tweeter, Bluetooth 5.0, balanced XLR/TRS and RCA inputs, a subwoofer output, rear-panel tone controls, and an included remote. Each cabinet measures 145 × 185 × 280 mm (W × D × H) [1]. The representative US price is 159.99 USD per pair at Amazon, excluding conditional checkout discounts [8].
Scientific Validity
\[\Large \text{0.2}\]Erin’s Audio Corner measured the S4000 with a Klippel NFS, using the tweeter axis and bass/treble controls at zero. Its on-axis linearity graph reports −12.67/+9.04 dB over 80 Hz–16 kHz, referenced to the 300 Hz–3 kHz mean; bass extension is 77 Hz at −3 dB and 46 Hz at −10 dB. Elevated treble and a deep notch near 2 kHz substantially alter tonal balance [2].
At 86 dB SPL/1 m, the acoustic THD graph is approximately −43 dB at 1 kHz (0.7%) and −25 dB around 1.5 kHz (5.6%). At 96 dB SPL/1 m, these rise to roughly −35 dB (1.8%) and −22 dB (7.9%). These percentages are approximate conversions from the plotted distortion ratios, not amplifier power-rating specifications. The 2.7-second sweep compression graph, referenced to 76 dB/1 m, shows about 1.6 dB of output shortfall around 1.4 kHz even at 86 dB. The full-band multitone graph also shows rising distortion through the midrange and crossover region as input increases. Erin estimates usable maximum output at approximately 86 dB/1 m [2].
AIYIMA’s official specification image states S/N ≥85 dB(A), without a complete test procedure [1]. This is a manufacturer specification, not independent noise measurement. The measured acoustic response and distortion remain the principal limitations. Treble reduction of 4–6 dB can improve the overall balance, but cannot by itself repair the crossover-region irregularities [2].
Technology Level
\[\Large \text{0.4}\]The S4000 combines conventional drivers, a bass-reflex cabinet, Bluetooth reception and integrated Class-D amplification. AIYIMA’s current component illustration identifies two TI TPA3118 amplifiers and an ESMT device labelled AD82178; other product copy calls the latter AD2178 [1][8]. These inconsistent labels do not establish the detailed signal-processing configuration. In particular, an amplifier-chip feature list cannot demonstrate which filters are programmed in this finished product. The measured group-delay behavior suggests that signal processing affects driver integration, although the precise implementation is not documented [2]. No product-specific patent or substantial technical barrier to reproducing this combination is established. It is an appropriate combination of digital reception, circuitry and acoustics, but offers little technical differentiation from readily available implementations.
Cost-Performance
\[\Large \text{1.0}\]The evaluation price is 159.99 USD per stereo pair [8]. The complete function set includes Bluetooth, balanced analog reception, RCA input, bass/treble adjustment, remote operation, built-in amplification and a separate subwoofer feed. Connector adapters can accommodate XLR versus TRS, but an omitted output requires more than a connector change. Performance equivalence requires equal-or-better frequency-response deviation, bass extension (measured to 46 Hz at −10 dB), distortion at 86 dB/1 m and usable output (approximately 86 dB/1 m) [2].
The Edifier MR3 costs 149.99 USD per pair and has Bluetooth, balanced TRS and RCA inputs, plus app-based controls, but no subwoofer output [3][9]. Its measured −10 dB bass extension is 53 Hz, so the speaker alone also falls short of the S4000’s low-frequency reach [11]. Its headphone socket mutes the speakers when used, so it cannot supply simultaneous speaker and subwoofer playback [7]. An upstream splitter distributes an external analog source only; it cannot also distribute the MR3’s internally decoded Bluetooth audio. A PreSonus MicroStation BT can instead receive Bluetooth and balanced analog sources upstream and feed both speakers and a subwoofer. Its 99.99 USD price brings this two-device configuration to 249.98 USD before cables, USB power and any additional remote-control hardware [10]. It therefore cannot undercut the S4000, even before completing the control functions or addressing bass extension.
Fluid Audio’s C50BT offers Bluetooth, balanced TRS, RCA and a subwoofer output at 199 USD per pair, already above the S4000’s price [4]. Its published specifications alone do not establish acoustic equivalence. Within the researched market, the S4000 is the lowest-priced confirmed option retaining its complete functions, so CP is 1.0. This reflects the cost of the full feature set; the response and distortion problems remain relevant to purchase decisions.
Reliability & Support
\[\Large \text{0.5}\]AIYIMA advertises a two-year warranty [6]. Its direct-store return policy asks buyers to contact the seller within 14 days and post returns within 30 days; it describes replacement or refund for qualifying defects and places return costs on the buyer [5]. Retailer return terms can differ. A worldwide repair network and product-specific spare-parts supply period are not established.
Erin’s review unit failed during full-bandwidth multitone testing, preventing the subsequent 80 Hz high-pass test [2]. This is a concrete concern about tolerance of sustained demanding signals, but one stress-test failure does not establish the ordinary-use failure rate. Model-specific long-term reliability statistics remain unavailable.
Rationality of Design Philosophy
\[\Large \text{0.6}\]Using integrated amplifier ICs, physical tone controls and multiple input formats directs hardware toward useful desktop playback functions. Cabinet stiffness and diaphragm rigidity also have legitimate acoustic purposes [1]. This is a cost-conscious design built around practical acoustic and connection requirements, without extravagant materials or accessories.
Advice
The S4000 provides an unusually complete set of desktop connections, including balanced inputs, remote control and a subwoofer feed. It is a poor choice for accurate monitoring without correction, and its output is limited. A treble setting around −4 to −6 dB is a useful starting point, not a complete remedy for the measured response [2]. Avoid sustained high-output, full-bandwidth use. If subwoofer output is unnecessary, the MR3 is an alternative with different functions; it should not be treated as a direct substitute for the complete S4000 system.
