Product Review
Audio-Technica ATH-CKD7NC
A wired USB-C in-ear with a built-in 96 kHz/24-bit DAC, hybrid noise cancelling and a hear-through mode; no third-party measurements were found, and no cheaper model with the same functions and the maker-specified 5–40,000 Hz range was found.
Overview
The Audio-Technica ATH-CKD7NC is a wired in-ear earphone that plugs into a USB Type-C port and contains its own DAC, rated for 96 kHz sampling and up to 24-bit. It adds hybrid active noise cancelling, a hear-through mode, an ENC (environmental noise cancellation) call microphone and an inline remote with an LED indicator. It has no battery and takes its power from the host device [1][2]. Audio-Technica announced it in Japan on 2026-02-19 and released it on 2026-02-27 in black and beige gold. A white version followed on 2026-09-18 [2][3].
The manufacturer lists a newly designed 11 mm dynamic driver, a 5–40,000 Hz frequency range, 108 dB/mW sensitivity, 17 ohms impedance and a weight of 9 g without the cable. The 1.2 m cable is Y-shaped, and the box includes XS, S, M and L eartips and a cord clip [1][2].
Audio-Technica was founded in Tokyo in 1962 [4] and began developing headphones in the late 1960s [5]. It sold a wired noise-cancelling in-ear, the ATH-ANC23, from 2011 [6] and has used hybrid noise cancelling since at least the ATH-ANC900BT of 2019 [7]. The ATH-CKS330NC, released in 2024 and still on sale, is a USB-C noise-cancelling sibling [8]. Audio-Technica’s own comparison chart shows the CKS330NC without the CKD7NC’s Hi-Res support, hear-through mode and ENC microphone [9].
Scientific Validity
\[\Large \text{0.5}\]No third-party measurements of the ATH-CKD7NC were found, and Audio-Technica publishes only nominal specifications such as its 5–40,000 Hz frequency range [1]. With no usable fidelity data, Scientific Validity cannot be evaluated and is set to 0.5.
Technology Level
\[\Large \text{0.5}\]The CKD7NC combines a 96 kHz/24-bit USB DAC, hybrid noise cancelling and a hear-through mode in a bus-powered wired earphone. Audio-Technica says the noise cancelling uses two microphones placed on the earphone bodies [1]. The hear-through mode uses the same built-in microphones, and one button cycles through off, noise cancelling (green LED) and hear-through (red LED) [10]. The call microphone on the remote has ENC noise reduction, and the housing is machined aluminium, which Audio-Technica says suppresses unwanted resonance [2]. The manufacturer-specified 40 kHz upper limit and 96 kHz/24-bit capability meet the Japan Audio Society’s Hi-Res definition on paper. The Hi-Res logo marks conformance to this definition, not a performance grade [11].
The manual describes the noise cancelling modestly: it works mainly on low-frequency noise, does not remove all noise, can produce a slight hiss, and can howl depending on fit [10]. Audio-Technica publishes no attenuation, distortion or latency figures, so its claims of high-precision noise cancelling and zero time lag cannot be checked [1][2]. Operation is entirely through the inline buttons, and Audio-Technica’s article on the model says it has no EQ or other fine sound-adjustment function [12].
The feature set is not distinctive today. The radius HP-NE30C and AVIOT CE-V1 also combine USB-C, noise cancelling, an ambient mode and 96 kHz/24-bit playback [13][14]. Bose’s Noise Cancelling Wired Earbuds, announced on 2026-09-28, use four microphones, two on each earbud, with Quiet and Aware modes [15]. Audio-Technica’s long experience with noise cancelling is offset by the lack of any demonstrated advantage over these peers, so the score stays at 0.5.
Cost-Performance
\[\Large \text{1.0}\]This site evaluates based solely on functionality and measured performance values, without considering driver types or configurations.
No US retail listing for the ATH-CKD7NC was found, and Audio-Technica’s US store does not carry it. Its price here is the prevailing Japanese retail price at major retailers [16][17][18], converted at the European Central Bank reference rate of 2026-10-05 to 55.05 USD [19]. Comparator prices below are also Japanese retail prices converted at the same rate, except for the Bose model [20].
The comparison is provisional and uses manufacturer specifications, because no third-party measurements of this model were found. The required functions are noise cancelling, a hear-through mode, a USB-C plug with an inline remote and call microphone, and 96 kHz/24-bit playback. The performance axis is the manufacturer-specified frequency range of 5–40,000 Hz. Within a ±5% margin, a comparator must reach 5.25 Hz or lower and 38,000 Hz or higher.
The closest candidates are the radius HP-NE30C at 34.76 USD and the AVIOT CE-V1 at 37.79 USD. Both offer noise cancelling, an ambient (hear-through) mode and 96 kHz/24-bit playback, but their manufacturers list 20–40,000 Hz, so the lower limit falls outside the margin [13][14]. The Hi-Unit HSE-A2000NC at 22.12 USD lists the same 5–40,000 Hz range, but no hear-through mode is listed for it, and the only noise-cancelling control on its remote diagram is an on/off button [21][22]. The Nagaoka NTYPEC02 (21.99 USD), Kashimura AE-231 (14.65 USD) and MOTTERU MOT-EPCNC01 (15.67 USD) have noise cancelling and a hear-through mode but list 20–20,000 Hz [23][24][25]. Audio-Technica’s ATH-CKS330NC at 33.77 USD lists 5–30,000 Hz, and no hear-through mode is listed for it [8]. The Bose Noise Cancelling Wired Earbuds cost more, at 99 USD [15].
Within this provisional comparison on manufacturer specifications, no cheaper product with equal or better functions and performance was found. The ATH-CKD7NC is the world’s cheapest product with its functions and performance, so CP is 1.0.
Reliability & Support
\[\Large \text{0.5}\]In Japan, Audio-Technica’s warranty gives one year of free repair from the date of purchase, valid in Japan only. Eartips are excluded, damage from drops or misuse is repaired for a fee, a repeat of the same fault within three months is repaired free, and performance parts are kept for six years after production ends [26]. Parallel imports and overseas-specification units are excluded from free repair [27]. Repairs are normally taken to the retailer. Buyers who cannot visit one request repair online and send the unit to Audio-Technica’s service center in Fukui, paying inbound shipping while Audio-Technica pays for the return [28]. Out of warranty, the listed repair for this model is a whole-unit replacement at 42.41 USD, converted at the rate above [29].
In Australia, the distributor TAG gives a one-year limited warranty alongside Australian Consumer Law guarantees [30]. In Singapore, the warranty is one year, valid in Singapore only, and excludes external cable damage [31].
The earphones are bus-powered, so there is no battery to age. The cable is not documented as detachable, and the manual warns about cord breakage [10]. No recall or recurring fault was found for this model. The one-year warranty counts against the score, while Audio-Technica’s long record and its own repair center in Japan count in its favor, so the score is 0.5.
Rationality of Design Philosophy
\[\Large \text{0.6}\]The design puts a DAC, hybrid noise cancelling, a hear-through mode, an ENC call microphone and a full remote into one bus-powered cable, so a phone or PC without a headphone jack needs no adapter, charging or pairing [1][2][10]. Compared with Audio-Technica’s own ATH-CKS330NC, it adds the hear-through mode, Hi-Res support and the ENC microphone [8][9]. These are functional additions, and the battery-free design avoids battery ageing.
Against this, the approach is conservative. Audio-Technica’s article on the model says there is no EQ or other fine sound adjustment [12], and operation is limited to the inline buttons [10], so users can only switch between the noise-cancelling and hear-through modes. Accessories are limited to eartips and a cord clip [1]. The useful integration and the clear step over the sibling model outweigh this conservative, non-adjustable approach, giving 0.6.
Advice
The CKD7NC suits listeners who want noise cancelling on a wired USB-C connection without charging or Bluetooth pairing. Audio-Technica’s compatibility list requires a host with a USB Type-C port that supports USB Audio Class 2.0, and phones must also support USB host mode [32]. The product page lists iPhone 15 or later, and Nintendo Switch 2 operation has been confirmed with a caveat that some operations may not work [1].
Check call use before buying. Audio-Technica’s compatibility list rates calls on its tested Windows 11 and macOS PCs as not compatible, and music playback as compatible with the caveat that some functions may not work correctly, although the manual’s PC setup steps have users select the earphones as both output and input device [32][10]. Calls on the iPhone 17, 17 Pro, 17 Pro Max and iPhone Air carry the same caveat [32].
The noise cancelling mainly reduces low-frequency noise, and fit affects both isolation and howling, so trying all four eartip sizes is worthwhile [10]. No case is included [1]. Audio-Technica’s US store does not carry the model. It is sold officially in Australia at 119 AUD including GST and in Singapore at 89 SGD including GST [33][34]. The Japanese warranty is valid only in Japan, and parallel imports are excluded from free repair [26][27].
