A compact passive monitoring headphone with moderate tonal accuracy, level-dependent distortion and useful isolation. Reversible cable entry is a distinctive practical feature; current pricing uses remaining overseas new stock.

Overview

The beyerdynamic DT 240 Pro is a compact passive headphone for portable monitoring. The manufacturer specifies 196 g without the cable and a nominal impedance of 34 ohms [12]. Its small ear-pad openings fit around or partly on the ears depending on the wearer. The detachable cable can connect to either earcup, and the cups turn flat for storage [1][12]. DIY-Audio-Heaven reports that the model was replaced by the DT 270 PRO in October 2025; remaining new stock is still listed by retailers [1][4].

Scientific Validity

\[\Large \text{0.5}\]

The manufacturer’s 5 Hz–35 kHz frequency range has no stated response tolerance [12]. AutoEq’s ranking, using oratory1990’s measurements for this model, reports a Harman-target error standard deviation of 3.12 dB [3]. This indicates moderate tonal deviation. Stereophile’s raw response has elevated bass around 70 Hz extending toward 350 Hz, followed by uneven treble. Its 3 kHz peak is approximately 2 dB below the target used in that analysis; the raw peak height is not a target-error value. The pronounced fall toward 5.5 kHz and subsequent peak near 9 kHz indicate uneven upper-frequency reproduction [2]. DIY-Audio-Heaven’s corrected flatbed response also shows elevated bass and treble irregularities, but its measurement compensation differs from the Harman target and cannot be compared directly as the same error metric [1].

Distortion is level-dependent. In DIY-Audio-Heaven’s unsmoothed 90 dB test, bass output reaches approximately 97 dB SPL because of the response elevation; the third harmonic approaches 4–5% around 80 Hz. Distortion also rises near 5 kHz, so the limitation is not confined to bass. At the lower 80 dB reference level, bass harmonics fall toward 1% and midrange distortion is substantially lower. The reported second-harmonic floor above 1 kHz limits precise interpretation of the lowest values [1]. The normalized 70–95 dB reference-level sweeps show approximately 2 dB of bass compression, while breaking the pad seal reduces bass substantially [1]. These results support moderate-level use but do not establish uniformly low distortion at high output.

InnerFidelity’s isolation plot reports 21 dB broadband attenuation over 100 Hz–10 kHz, with weak low-frequency isolation and much stronger treble attenuation. Its measured 57 mV RMS requirement for 90 dB SPL makes ordinary headphone outputs sufficient [2]. There is no ANC or active electronic noise source. The published plots do not establish IMD or an acoustic dynamic-range figure. Overall, moderate tonal accuracy and useful but uneven isolation are offset by distortion at higher levels.

Technology Level

\[\Large \text{0.2}\]

The design uses a conventional moving-coil driver, passive acoustic tuning and a mechanical headband, without electronic or software integration [1]. These are mature, widely reproducible methods. The reversible cable connection is practical, but does not demonstrate a substantial technical barrier to replication. The available documentation does not establish model-specific patented technology or ownership of the driver’s detailed design. The implementation is straightforward rather than technologically advanced.

This site evaluates based solely on functionality and measured performance values, without considering driver types or configurations. Current normal new stock in the US or Japan was not established. The overseas retail benchmark is BAJAAO’s 9,660 INR listing, with dispatch in 3–5 days, equivalent to 100.81 USD using the ECB’s September 21, 2026 rate [4][5]. This is an Indian retail reference price. BAJAAO’s published shipping terms describe Indian delivery; US or Japanese delivery was not established, and international shipping and import charges are not included [11].

An equivalent alternative must provide comparable tonal accuracy, distortion, output and isolation, along with a replaceable cable that can enter from either earcup and cups that turn flat for storage. Superlux HD662 EVO provides detachable extension cables but its headphone connection is fixed to one side [7]. Adding a finished equalizer, adapter or extension cable cannot provide an electrical connection at the opposite earcup without modifying the headphone, so this combination does not replace the DT 240 Pro’s user functions.

OneOdio A71 is a less expensive functional candidate at 35.99 USD, with detachable connections on both earcups. Its manufacturer specifies 20 Hz–40 kHz without a response tolerance, 32 ohms and 110 ±3 dB sensitivity without a reference unit [9]. Those specifications cannot establish equivalence to the DT 240 Pro’s measured 3.12 dB Harman-error STD, level-dependent harmonic distortion and 21 dB broadband isolation.

Koss Pro4S, listed at 99.99 USD, offers either-side cable entry and flat storage [6]. InnerFidelity measured 20 dB broadband isolation and 38 mV RMS for 90 dB SPL, but its 90/100 dB distortion plots show additional peaks around 200 Hz that are higher than those of the DT 240 Pro [2][10]. It therefore does not provide equivalent-or-better measured performance throughout. Adding EQ does not by itself establish equivalent distortion at the required output and isolation.

In this provisional comparison of verified functions and measurements, including finished accessory combinations, no cheaper complete equivalent has been established. The DT 240 Pro itself is therefore the cheapest equivalent option used here, and CP is 1.0. The A71 performance comparison and overseas availability remain limitations; this result does not imply the best measured sound quality.

Reliability & Support

\[\Large \text{0.7}\]

The simple passive construction requires no rechargeable battery. Replaceable ear pads and a detachable cable make several common wear points serviceable [1][12]. The headband padding is not readily replaceable, and synthetic-leather surfaces remain subject to wear. beyerdynamic maintains international manufacturer support and advertises up to two years of warranty, subject to purchase documentation and regional conditions; its published terms exclude normal wear and body-contact pads, and limit cable coverage to three months [8]. These exclusions matter when buying remaining stock. A guaranteed supply period or current availability for every DT 240 Pro replacement part is not established. Simple construction and an established support network support above-average reliability prospects, without implying a measured failure rate.

Rationality of Design Philosophy

\[\Large \text{0.6}\]

The compact passive design directs hardware toward useful functions: acoustic isolation, portable monitoring, flat storage and flexible cable routing [12]. Its replaceable pads and cable support continued use without adding batteries or complex controls. These choices serve a clear monitoring purpose. They do not, by themselves, demonstrate an innovative development approach or a measured improvement over earlier models.

Advice

The DT 240 Pro is most relevant when compact size, passive isolation and selectable cable-entry side are useful. Try the small ear openings before purchase, and confirm warranty eligibility and replacement-pad availability with the seller. Its tonal balance is not neutral, and elevated listening levels increase distortion; it is not an ideal sole reference for precise mixing. Buyers who do not need reversible cable routing can consider a broader set of alternatives, while the quoted Indian reference price requires confirmation of an available delivery route and total import cost.
