HiFiMAN HM-801
A pioneering 2009 audiophile DAP with a modular amplifier design, the HM-801 delivers compromised measured performance, including high-frequency attenuation in RAA measurements, while modern alternatives at a fraction of its original price offer superior measured results with ongoing support.
Overview
The HiFiMAN HM-801, released in June 2009 by Head-Direct (HiFiMAN), was the company’s debut flagship portable digital audio player, designed to deliver audiophile-grade lossless music playback in a portable form factor [1]. It features a Burr-Brown PCM1704U R-2R multibit DAC, a proprietary “GanQi Bay” modular amplifier system allowing user-swappable headphone amplifier cards, support for FLAC/WAV up to 24-bit/96 kHz from SDHC storage, and a coaxial digital input. The device launched at USD 749 and is now discontinued, available only on the secondary market.
Scientific Validity
\[\Large \text{0.4}\]RAA measurements [2] of the stock Power Amp Board V2.0 show frequency response deviation of −1.6 to +0.2 dB within the 40–15 kHz test window, with the largest attenuation at the upper end of that window. Because the cited numeric report stops at 15 kHz and already shows attenuation at high frequency, full-band 20 Hz–20 kHz flatness is not established; this is a meaningful deficiency for a device marketed as high-fidelity audio. Crosstalk at 1 kHz measures −59.5 dB at a 15.8 Ω load and −55.4/−55.3 dB L/R at the more representative 100 Ω load — a marginal result that falls well short of excellent. The manufacturer specifies an S/N ratio of 102 dB [1], which has no independent numeric verification. THD data from RAA is available in graph form across multiple amp module configurations, covering the 2nd through 20th harmonics; no single numeric value is extractable, and no gross distortion is indicated by the source. The stock amplifier’s 18.22 Ω output impedance produces measurable frequency response deviations when driving low-impedance headphones. Across all evaluated metrics, no specification reaches an excellent level; the high-frequency attenuation and high output impedance are the most significant limitations.
Technology Level
\[\Large \text{0.5}\]The HM-801 was an in-house design by HiFiMAN founder Dr. Fang Bian, representing original engineering rather than OEM sourcing. The proprietary GanQi Bay modular amplifier system was genuinely novel in the portable DAP segment at release: no competing product in 2009–2010 offered user-swappable amplifier modules with published pin-out schematics for third-party development, and this capability remained unmatched in the mainstream portable DAP market for approximately three to four years. Against present-day standards, however, the core component stack is severely dated. The Burr-Brown PCM1704 DAC originated in the late 1990s and was discontinued around 2011; the OPA627 and OPA2107 op-amps are similarly early-to-mid 1990s designs. The R-2R DAC approach built around a discontinued chip that underperforms contemporary alternatives is technology no current manufacturer would choose to adopt, and the GanQi Bay concept, while innovative at its time, never achieved broad industry adoption.
Cost-Performance
\[\Large \text{0.2}\]The HM-801 launched at USD 749 (original MSRP; the product is discontinued and no longer available new, so the launch price is used as the evaluation basis). The Shanling M0 Pro (145.99 USD) [6] provides equivalent-or-better standalone DAP functionality: FLAC/WAV playback from MicroSD storage up to 2 TB, a 3.5mm headphone output, a software-selectable line output, and a USB-C digital input. Measurement-based assessments [3] confirm the M0 Pro meets or exceeds the HM-801 across all evaluated dimensions:
- Frequency response deviation: flat across 20–40 kHz (M0 Pro, manufacturer spec as reviewed by ASR [3]) vs. −1.6 to +0.2 dB within the 40–15 kHz window with the largest attenuation at the upper end (HM-801, RAA measured [2]) — M0 Pro clearly superior

Reliability & Support
\[\Large \text{0.2}\]The HM-801 carries a one-year manufacturer warranty, below the two-year average. Documented hardware reliability issues include widespread reports of the 3.5mm headphone jack loosening and producing intermittent or absent output, severe SD card slot compatibility problems requiring specific card brands and classes to avoid firmware failures, system freezes requiring complete battery removal, and initial production quality issues that necessitated a manufacturing process change [4]. Firmware development ceased with version 0.23 in February 2012; no updates have been issued in over 14 years. No current official spare-parts listing or model-specific firmware/download page is cited, leaving only general manufacturer contact channels for legacy inquiries.
Rationality of Design Philosophy
\[\Large \text{0.4}\]HiFiMAN’s published design documentation explicitly states that the PCM1704U DAC was selected because of “a widely held belief that newer digital-to-analog conversion chips do not match the sound quality of older ones” [5] — a subjective, belief-based rationale with no measurement evidence. At the time of the HM-801’s development, delta-sigma DAC architectures including the Wolfson WM8740, Cirrus Logic CS4398, and ESS Sabre ES9018 were commercially mature and demonstrated measured performance equal to or exceeding the PCM1704 in key specifications; the chip selection was a deliberate departure from the available state of the art driven by audiophile belief rather than technical evidence. HiFiMAN’s own account states that the PCM1704’s demanding power supply requirements consumed the majority of the hardware engineering effort [5], directing substantial design cost toward enabling an ideologically chosen legacy component rather than toward audible performance improvement. The accompanying claim that the PCM1704 delivers superior sound quality has no published blind test or independent measurement support.
On the constructive side, HiFiMAN’s successor product, the HM-802 (released 2013), moved to a Wolfson WM8740 delta-sigma DAC with higher maximum sample rate support and improved specifications, demonstrating meaningful measured performance progression from one generation to the next. The GanQi Bay modular amplifier concept was a genuinely innovative approach to portable audio design with no precedent in the category at the time.
Advice
The HM-801 is a discontinued product with multiple documented structural reliability failures—headphone jack failure, SD card compatibility problems, system freezes—and no documented product-specific firmware updates or official spare-parts availability. The Shanling M0 Pro at 145.99 USD delivers superior measured frequency response, superior crosstalk (−72 dB vs. −55.4 dB at 100 Ω), and a higher manufacturer-specified S/N ratio (118 dB vs. 102 dB), while adding Bluetooth connectivity, app control, and MicroSD storage up to 2 TB, all with current product support and a current warranty. Users who do not need a separate DAP should also consider a smartphone or PC with a compact USB DAC, which replaces the core playback/DAC role while adding modern software support. There is no measured audio quality rationale for purchasing the HM-801 at any price on the used market when current alternatives perform better across all evaluated dimensions and remain in active production with support.
