Overview

The Questyle M15 is a portable USB-C DAC and headphone amplifier released in 2022. It combines an ESS ES9281AC DAC/USB interface with two Questyle Current Mode Amplification (CMA) System-in-Package modules, forming four amplifier engines for its 3.5mm single-ended and 4.4mm balanced outputs [1]. A manual gain switch is provided, but there is no hardware volume control. Supported formats include PCM up to 32-bit/384kHz, native DSD256, and full MQA decoding; compatibility covers Android 5.0 or later, Windows 10 version 1803 or later, macOS, and iOS, with a separate Lightning OTG cable required for Lightning-equipped iPhones [1]. The model is no longer available as a new product from the checked US and Japanese retailers [3].

Scientific Validity

L7Audiolab measured a user-loaned unit across both outputs [2]. Its high-gain dashboards produced 1.989–1.992Vrms single-ended and 3.975–3.986Vrms balanced, with THD+N of 0.000743–0.000882% and SINAD of 101.1–102.6dB. Dynamic-range results were 116.7–119.1dB. The graph explicitly labeled as a 50mV S/N test returned approximately 87.0dB; this low-level result is not treated as a full-scale S/N figure. Linearity remained close to ideal through about -100dBFS, and the 12kHz FFT, SMPTE IMD, and multitone plots showed low spurious and intermodulation products. Frequency response stayed near 0dB through most of the audible band, then measured -0.256dB at 16kHz and -0.921dB at 20kHz. In the balanced load sweeps, approximate output at the source’s THD+N-greater-than-1% cutoff was 46mW into 300 ohms, 107mW into 68 ohms, 80mW into 32 ohms, and 56mW into 16 ohms [2]. The available third-party results establish low distortion, good low-level behavior, and usable load drive, while the high-frequency deviation and absence of published crosstalk and output-impedance graphs leave the verification short of the highest score.

Technology Level

The technically distinctive element is Questyle’s patented, in-house CMA implementation: two compact amplifier modules are arranged as four engines around a conventional third-party DAC/USB interface [1]. This shows genuine analog-circuit ownership and accumulated current-mode amplifier expertise. However, CMA was already a mature Questyle technology when the M15 was released, and the surrounding USB decoding, format support, and portable DAC integration use established approaches. The product therefore demonstrates competent proprietary engineering without a current technological lead that would be difficult for other portable DAC/amplifier designs to match in user-visible function or measured output.

Cost-Performance

The M15 has no confirmed current new-market price. For a reproducible denominator, this review uses its last documented US retail price of 249 USD; the cited listing is out of stock, and used prices are excluded [3]. A current-market comparison did not confirm a lower-priced new product that combines USB-C input, both 3.5mm and 4.4mm outputs, manual gain control, PCM 384kHz and DSD256 support, full MQA decoding, and independent measurements equal to or better than the M15 on all documented performance axes. Products lacking full MQA decoding or independent measurements cannot qualify as equivalent. The M15 itself at 249 USD therefore remains the comparison basis, so no cheaper qualified alternative is established and CP is 1.0. Because the M15 is discontinued, this is a historical equivalence result rather than evidence that a new unit can presently be purchased.

Reliability & Support

Questyle specifies a 12-month warranty and a 14-day change-of-mind return window, with return shipping and handling conditions [4]. More importantly for an owner after that period, the same policy states that paid out-of-warranty repair is temporarily unavailable outside mainland China [4]. The M15 is no longer in the checked retailers’ new-product inventory [3], and its download page lists only firmware v9399 dated 2022-08-05 and the earlier v0427 package, with no newer release shown [4]. The solid-state dongle has no moving parts, but no statistical failure-rate or documented long-term parts-supply data was found. The short warranty, ended retail lifecycle, and restricted international repair path outweigh the mechanically simple construction.

Rationality of Design Philosophy

The M15 pursues low distortion, wide bandwidth, low power consumption, and useful output from a compact USB-powered device, and the independent measurements substantiate the low-distortion part of that approach [1][2]. Combining two headphone outputs, manual gain control, format decoding, and four amplifier engines in a 61.8 x 27.2 x 12mm enclosure is also functionally coherent [1]. However, the available data measure only the finished device; they do not isolate an audible or cost-saving advantage attributable specifically to CMA over a simpler amplifier implementation. The design direction is therefore measurement-oriented and well integrated, but the proprietary complexity is not independently shown to improve the user outcome beyond the strong overall results.

Advice

Existing owners have a compact device with very low measured distortion, strong dynamic range, and useful balanced-output power. They should retain the required cables and firmware files because the retail lifecycle has ended and international post-warranty repair is restricted [3][4]. For a new purchase, the CP score should not be read as a recommendation to seek scarce old stock: no current new supply was confirmed. Buy only if a genuinely new unit includes enforceable warranty coverage and the complete MQA function set is required; otherwise, a currently supported USB DAC/amplifier is the safer choice, even if its format list differs.
