Product Review
Questyle ZEN Hi-Fi
A compact wired IEM with a detachable cable, a strongly bass-emphasized measured response, limited measurement disclosure, and a substantially cheaper alternative with better documented performance.
Overview
Questyle is primarily known for its Current Mode Amplification DAC/amp and DAP products. The ZEN Hi-Fi is the company’s third in-ear earphone release. It uses a 9.6mm dynamic driver with a plant-fiber composite diaphragm, a PVD-coated metal shell, and a detachable 2-pin cable terminated in a 3.5mm plug [1][3]. The current direct price is 59.99 USD, or 74.99 USD including the required standard shipping charge, before destination duties and taxes [2][12].
Scientific Validity
\[\Large \text{0.4}\]Headfonics’ frequency-response graph [1] shows closely matched left/right channels, approximately 15dB of bass elevation at 20Hz relative to the midrange minimum, and multiple treble peaks. A reading of the graph at 31 nominal one-third-octave frequencies from 20Hz to 20kHz gives an approximate 4.0dB standard deviation of the deviation from Harman IE2019; restricting the calculation to 20Hz–10kHz gives approximately 3.6dB [1][11]. These are estimates from the published image, not fixture-corrected measurements: the reviewer does not identify the fixture, calibration, insertion depth, or measurement level. The listening section specifies stock cable, factory tips, and no EQ, but does not explicitly establish those as the graph’s test configuration. The bass-heavy balance is clear, while high-frequency resonances and the exact target deviation remain sensitive to the unknown test setup.
Questyle lists THD of 0.05% or less and 40dB passive isolation, without frequency, sound-pressure level, or a definition of how isolation was summarized [2][3]. These manufacturer specifications cannot establish distortion across the audible band or 40dB attenuation at every frequency. The independent response data support the tonal assessment, but distortion and isolation still lack independent verification for this model.
Technology Level
\[\Large \text{0.4}\]Questyle reports acoustic simulation, more than two years of shell development, more than 50 prototypes, and wear testing with over 100 people [1][3]. This supports ownership of a deliberately developed acoustic and mechanical design. The single-driver acoustic system, metal shell, detachable cable, and passive tips use mature technology. The cited sources do not establish a product-specific patent or a sustained technical advantage, and the passive analog design has no digital integration. The development work is identifiable, although a new technical platform is not demonstrated.
Cost-Performance
\[\Large \text{0.3}\]This site evaluates based solely on functionality and measured performance values, without considering driver types or configurations. The ZEN Hi-Fi’s current direct offer is 59.99 USD plus 15 USD standard shipping, totaling 74.99 USD before recipient duties and taxes [2][12]. The page also shows a regular price of 69.99 USD, but gives no expiry or coupon requirement for the current offer. The TRUTHEAR GATE without microphone is available for 21.99 USD with standard shipping included [8][9]. It is the cheapest identified finished alternative supporting a detachable 3.5mm analog connection and documented frequency response, distortion, and passive isolation.
Audio Science Review’s GATE response data give approximately 1.9dB STD from Harman IE2019 over the same 31-point, 20Hz–20kHz grid; its distortion graph shows approximately 0.02–0.03% THD at 1kHz in the 94dB SPL test [6][11]. SoundGuys’ isolation curve is approximately 6–10dB through much of the bass and approximately 30–39dB through much of the treble [7]. Its response is more closely target-aligned than the ZEN graph’s pronounced bass emphasis, while the measured midrange distortion and upper-frequency isolation are comparable to ZEN’s published 0.05% and 40dB specifications. This is a provisional comparison: ZEN’s unspecified test conditions do not establish equal distortion or isolation throughout the audible band, and the different response fixtures prevent a precise cross-fixture ranking. No extra cable, amplifier, or EQ device is required for this analog-use comparison; neither EQ nor an unmeasured tip change would establish broadband isolation equivalence. The lower-cost GATE is used on the available measured and catalog evidence, subject to revision if comparable ZEN measurements become available.
The corresponding Japanese offers produce a different price ratio, so both language editions use these US-facing prices for the score [5][10].
CP = 21.99 USD / 74.99 USD = 0.2932
Reliability & Support
\[\Large \text{0.4}\]The ZEN Hi-Fi carries a 1-year limited warranty, also listed for the Japanese authorized-retail product [4][5]. Its simple passive construction avoids batteries and powered electronics, the metal shell protects the acoustic assembly, and the detachable cable allows replacement of a common wear item [1][3]. Questyle’s published policy still says paid out-of-warranty repair is temporarily unavailable outside mainland China, citing COVID-related logistics [4]. This limits the documented long-term repair path, although it does not establish that every regional dealer currently refuses service. No model-specific failure statistics or long-term parts commitment were found. The short warranty and published post-warranty restriction offset the practical construction.
Rationality of Design Philosophy
\[\Large \text{0.4}\]The detachable cable, five tip sizes, acoustic simulation, and fit prototyping serve practical acoustic, fit, and replacement needs [1][3]. However, Questyle attributes high-frequency transparency, natural midrange texture, and tighter bass transmission to the silver-plated OFC cable without controlled evidence. It also promotes use-induced diaphragm stabilization as producing smoother, more transparent reproduction [3]. The design combines useful functional expenditure with subjective sound-quality claims; the cable claim does not establish an audible advantage over an electrically adequate ordinary cable, and the claimed benefit of running in this model has not been demonstrated by controlled before-and-after measurements.
Advice
The ZEN Hi-Fi suits buyers specifically seeking substantial bass emphasis and a compact metal body with a replaceable cable. Its published measurements do not establish neutral reference reproduction or broadband 40dB isolation. The TRUTHEAR GATE offers a much cheaper, better-documented route to a target-aligned response, with the isolation and comparison limitations described above. Buyers relying on long-term repair should check the applicable regional terms, particularly when ordering directly across borders.
