Product Review
Skullcandy Icon ANC
A foldable on-ear wireless headphone with noise cancelling, an app EQ, multipoint and a 3.5 mm input; no measurements were found, and the Tribit QuietPlus 81 offers the same core functions with longer claimed battery life at 59.99 USD.
Overview
The Skullcandy Icon ANC is a closed, foldable, on-ear wireless headphone with active noise cancelling, an adjustable Stay-Aware (transparency) mode, app control and a removable 3.5 mm cable for wired listening [1][2]. Skullcandy announced and released it on 2024-10-01 at an MSRP of 99.99 USD [3], presenting it as the revival of an Icon headphone that, in its words, “blew up the boardsports world” almost 20 years earlier [1]. It went on sale in Japan on 2025-01-17 [4].
The manufacturer lists a 40 mm driver, 32 ohms impedance, a weight of 225 g, IPX4 water resistance, Bluetooth 5.3 with LE Audio, and a battery life of more than 50 hours with noise cancelling on and more than 60 hours with it off. A 10-minute charge gives more than 4 hours of playback [1][2]. In the Skullcandy app, users can set the noise-cancelling and Stay-Aware levels, choose three EQ presets (Music, Bass Boost, Podcast) or a 5-band custom EQ, and use Mimi Personal Sound, two-device multipoint, Google Fast Pair with Find My Device, Spotify Tap, custom button functions and a Low-Latency Audio Mode [2]. Skullcandy also lists a natural-voice sidetone for calls [1][3].
The FCC grant for the model is dated 2024-08-06; in the label drawing filed with it, the earcup label reads “Made In Vietnam” and the drawing is headed “Designed In Park City, UT” [5]. Skullcandy has been privately held since its merger with an affiliate of Mill Road Capital closed on 2016-10-03 [6].
Scientific Validity
\[\Large \text{0.5}\]No third-party measurements of the Icon ANC were found, and Skullcandy publishes only nominal specifications such as a 20 Hz–20 kHz frequency response with no stated tolerance [1]. With no usable fidelity data, Scientific Validity cannot be evaluated and is set to 0.5.
Technology Level
\[\Large \text{0.4}\]The FCC RF exposure report lists Bluetooth 5.3 and a 3.7 V, 600 mAh battery [7]. The noise-cancelling and Stay-Aware levels are set manually in the app, and Skullcandy’s help page describes no adaptive mode [2]. Skullcandy claims LE Audio support but publishes no codec list, and PCMag reports that the headphones “only support the basic SBC codec” [8]. Software features include Mimi’s hearing-test-based personalisation, which PCMag also describes [2][8], and the Clear Voice microphone, which Skullcandy says “uses artificial intelligence to isolate the speaker’s voice” [2].
Today’s reference point is well ahead. Sony’s WH-1000XM6, announced on 2025-05-15 at 449.99 USD, uses a QN3 processor that Sony describes as “seven times faster”, twelve microphones and an Adaptive NC Optimizer [9], and it supports SBC, AAC, LDAC and LC3 [10]. The Soundcore Space One already offered adaptive noise cancelling and LDAC at 99.99 USD in 2023 [11], and the Tribit QuietPlus 81 now offers the Icon ANC’s core functions with a longer claimed battery life at 59.99 USD [12][13]. Skullcandy’s FCC label drawing is headed “Designed In Park City, UT” [5], but its feature set is standard among current models and it has no technology that competitors lack, so the score is 0.4.
Cost-Performance
\[\Large \text{0.6}\]This site evaluates based solely on functionality and measured performance values, without considering driver types or configurations.
The Icon ANC’s regular US price is 99.99 USD at Skullcandy’s US store [1]. Temporary deals are not used. No third-party measurements of the Icon ANC were found, so this comparison is provisional and uses functions and manufacturer specifications.
The comparator is the Tribit QuietPlus 81, an over-ear model sold at 59.99 USD on Tribit’s US store [12]. It is equipped with active noise cancelling, a transparency mode, a 3.5 mm wired input with an included cable, two-device multipoint, an app with a user-adjustable 10-band EQ, call microphones and a low-latency Game Mode [12][13][14][15], and its manufacturer-stated frequency-response range (20 Hz–20 kHz vs 20 Hz–20 kHz) is equivalent-or-better [1][13]. Its manufacturer-claimed battery life is also longer with noise cancelling on (70 hours vs more than 50 hours) and off (110 hours vs more than 60 hours) [1][13]. Both are reported to use the SBC codec [8][14]. The Icon ANC’s IPX4 rating, adjustable noise-cancelling and Stay-Aware levels, hearing-test personalisation and Google Fast Pair are not needed for normal listening, so they are not treated as required functions.
CP = 59.99 USD ÷ 99.99 USD = 0.60 → 0.6
Reliability & Support
\[\Large \text{0.3}\]In the United States, Skullcandy gives a one-year limited warranty for products bought from authorized sellers. The stated remedy is a replacement or a warranty credit capped at the MSRP [16]. Skullcandy’s US replacement-parts page states: “Spare parts are not currently unavailable [sic].” [17] In Japan, the distributor VISTAL VISION gives a one-year warranty covering repair or exchange for units bought from Japanese authorized dealers, excluding damage from external causes, consumables, accessories and ageing [18]. Skullcandy Japan does not sell parts on their own [19].
The Skullcandy app added Icon ANC support in version 3.7.5 on 2024-09-24 and reached version 5.0.5 on 2026-08-11 [20]. Owner reviews on Skullcandy’s store, 576 posted from 2024-10-23 to 2026-10-04 with 223 of them incentivized, include 54 reports of sound being lost on one side: 37 on the right, 4 on the left and 13 unspecified. Most of the reports that give a timing place it within the first few months of use [21]. These are self-selected reviews, not a failure rate, and no cause is stated. The one-year warranty and the lack of established parts or repair support beyond it give 0.3.
Rationality of Design Philosophy
\[\Large \text{0.6}\]The Icon ANC combines adjustable noise cancelling, Stay-Aware, an app EQ, Mimi hearing-test personalisation, multipoint, Fast Pair with Find My Device, a low-latency mode, IPX4 water resistance, a wired 3.5 mm input and a claimed battery life of more than 50 hours with noise cancelling on in a 225 g foldable headphone [1][2]. Its app EQ, hearing-test personalisation, voice isolation for calls and Google Fast Pair rely on software and signal processing [2], an effective use of current technology to add practical functions.
The core choices are conservative for a 2024 launch. Noise cancelling is adjusted manually rather than adaptively [2], and PCMag reports SBC as the only codec [8], although the Soundcore Space One already offered adaptive noise cancelling and LDAC at the same 99.99 USD in 2023 [11]. Skullcandy’s sound claims, such as “looks better, sounds better” [1] and Mimi making music sound “EXACTLY as it was meant to sound” [2], are not backed by published measurements. The broad functional integration and use of software outweigh these conservative choices, giving 0.6.
Advice
The Icon ANC suits listeners who want a compact, foldable on-ear headphone with noise cancelling, a long claimed battery life and a wired fallback through its 3.5 mm cable [1]. On-ear pads rest on the ears rather than surrounding them, so check fit and comfort; the headphones weigh 225 g [1]. Skullcandy’s help page lists Nintendo Switch as compatible and Xbox One and PS4/5 as not compatible [2]. Listeners who want higher-quality Bluetooth codecs should note PCMag’s report that only SBC is supported [8].
The regular US price is 99.99 USD. On 2026-10-06, Amazon listed the True Black version at a limited-time deal of 49.99 USD against a list price of 99.99 USD [22]. The warranty is one year in both the US and Japan [16][18], and owner reviews include repeated reports of sound loss on one side [21]. Buyers who accept an over-ear fit can consider the Tribit QuietPlus 81 at 59.99 USD, which has the same core functions and a longer claimed battery life [12][13].
