Single dynamic driver IEM at USD 930 with excellent 1 kHz THD and acceptable Harman target alignment, but a sub-80 USD ZERO:RED plus 4.4mm cable bundle delivers equivalent-or-better measured performance and functionality. Design investment is concentrated in materials and aesthetics with no confirmed audible benefit, below-average passive isolation, and a below-industry-average 1-year warranty.

Overview

The Softears Twilight is a single-dynamic-driver in-ear monitor released in October 2022, positioned as Softears’ flagship single-DD offering at USD 930. It succeeds the discontinued Turii, inheriting the patented front-and-rear cavity coupling technology (Patent No. 202010157930) in a new 10mm driver platform with a DLC dome diaphragm and FreeEdge PU suspension. The CNC-machined aluminum alloy shell weighs 6 grams per unit. The package includes a 4.4mm balanced cable with a 3.5mm adapter; the 0.78mm 2-pin connectors are user-replaceable.

Third-party measurements show THD of 0.028% at 1 kHz and 94 dB SPL — excellent distortion performance [2]. Spectral THD across the full frequency range peaks at 0.4% near 7,450 Hz under the same 94 dB SPL conditions, elevated compared to the 1 kHz baseline and reflecting a resonance characteristic in this frequency region. At elevated drive levels, 1 kHz THD rises to 0.087% at 104 dB SPL, with peak spectral THD reaching 1.2% at approximately 5,180 Hz — indicating significant distortion under high-level conditions.

Frequency response data from multiple third-party sources shows overall alignment with the Harman in-ear target, with deviation estimated at approximately ±2.5 dB [2][4] — acceptable but not optimal. The manufacturer specifies a 20 Hz–20 kHz effective range and THD below 1% at 1 kHz [1]; the independently measured 0.028% substantially exceeds this stated specification.

Passive isolation is below average due to five slotted front vents in the housing [2]. No numeric isolation figure in dB has been obtained from any independent measurement source. Signal-to-noise ratio is not reported by any third-party source.

Excellent 1 kHz distortion performance together with acceptable frequency response alignment supports a high measured performance rating. The elevated spectral THD at the resonance frequency and below-average passive isolation prevent a higher evaluation.

The Twilight is an in-house design from Softears’ dedicated Chengdu R&D laboratory. The registered cavity coupling patent (No. 202010157930) governs matched front-and-rear cavity volumes and viscoelastic damping materials for resonance suppression — a genuine proprietary contribution. Over 100 documented acoustic experiments for cavity optimization reflect meaningful technical accumulation.

The core driver materials — DLC dome diaphragm, FreeEdge PU suspension, and ultra-thin Daikoku voice coil — were commercially established in the IEM segment before the July 2022 launch and are broadly deployed across the industry by 2026. The 5-axis CNC machined aluminum housing, while precision-machined, contributes negligibly to acoustic performance and serves primarily an aesthetic function. As a fully passive analog design with no digital processing or software integration, the product incorporates no advancement in functional integration. The cavity coupling technology is proprietary but covers a field that competing manufacturers navigate independently via their own acoustic R&D; no competitive barrier to catch-up is present.

Cost-Performance

\[\Large \text{0.1}\]

This site evaluates based solely on functionality and measured performance values, without considering driver types or configurations.

The Softears Twilight is a passive wired IEM with 3.5mm SE and 4.4mm balanced analog connectivity via a detachable 0.78mm 2-pin cable system, with no DSP, EQ, or wireless functions.

The TRUTHEAR x Crinacle ZERO:RED (USD 54.99) plus Tripowin Zoe 0.78mm 2pin/4.4mm balanced cable (USD 19.99), total USD 74.98 [5][6], is the cheapest confirmed equivalent-or-better bundle found. It provides passive wired IEM functionality, 3.5mm SE connectivity, 4.4mm balanced connectivity through the added cable, and detachable 0.78mm 2-pin compatibility. ASR measurements show a very good target match and extremely low THD even at 114 dB SPL [3], exceeding the Twilight’s high-level distortion behavior while maintaining equivalent basic functionality.

Reliability & Support

\[\Large \text{0.5}\]

The Softears Twilight carries a 1-year manufacturer warranty covering manufacturing defects including channel imbalance and connection failures, while excluding physical damage, wear, and cosmetic damage. This is below the 2-year industry benchmark. Some authorized retailers extend coverage to 2 years under their own return policies.

Support is provided through authorized regional dealers and directly via the official online store for international purchases; no dedicated global support portal or on-site service program is documented. As a fully passive IEM with a single dynamic driver in a solid aluminum shell and a standard detachable 0.78mm 2-pin connector, the design has inherently few mechanical or electrical failure points.

Rationality of Design Philosophy

\[\Large \text{0.2}\]

The Twilight embodies a traditional premium craftsmanship approach. The majority of the product’s cost is allocated to materials and manufacturing aesthetics — aviation-grade aluminum alloy shell, 5-axis CNC machining, matched-pair assembly, 6N OFC cable — with no confirmed audible performance benefit documented for any of these investments. Official product communications contain no reference to measurement targets, frequency response standards, or objective verification methodology; reviewer characterizations consistently describe the tuning as oriented toward smoothness rather than neutral measurement accuracy.

At the July 2022 launch date, DSP-equipped IEMs with app-controlled equalization were commercially available, so the passive single-DD approach at USD 930 with no EQ capability cannot be attributed to lack of alternatives. The patented cavity coupling technology represents a plausible acoustic engineering investment, but independent verification of its audible effect is absent. Model progression from the Turii shows a significant price reduction, but no comparative third-party acoustic measurement data exists to confirm whether acoustic performance improved or regressed.

Advice

The Softears Twilight achieves excellent 1 kHz distortion and acceptable Harman target alignment, but equivalent-or-better measured acoustic performance and connectivity can be obtained with a ZERO:RED plus 4.4mm cable bundle at USD 74.98. The USD 930 price reflects premium materials and craftsmanship — precision-machined aluminum, matched-pair assembly — that carry no confirmed audible benefit. The 1-year warranty falls below the typical 2-year industry standard.

The vented housing delivers below-average passive isolation, making this product unsuitable for use in noisy environments. For buyers prioritizing measured acoustic performance, the cost difference between this product and its measured-performance equivalents cannot be objectively justified. Buyers who specifically require 4.4mm balanced connectivity out of the box should note that replacement cables are widely available at low cost for cheaper alternatives using the same 0.78mm 2-pin connector standard.
