A feature-rich desktop DAC and headphone amplifier with excellent manufacturer-stated measurements, unusually broad digital connectivity, PEQ, and crossfeed, but a high price and no independent bench verification.

Overview

The TOPPING DX9 Discrete is TOPPING’s current top-tier desktop DAC and headphone amplifier, released in October 2025 and currently offered for 1,299 USD [1][2]. Guangzhou-based TOPPING, founded in 2008, positions this unit as a second-generation successor to its original AK4499EQ-based DX9, replacing the converter chip with a self-developed 16-element PSRM discrete 1-bit DAC circuit paired with a six-channel discrete NFCA headphone amplifier. The unit adds onboard 10-band parametric EQ, headphone crossfeed processing, eight digital inputs (USB, Bluetooth, dual optical, dual coaxial, AES, and I²S), and XLR/RCA line outputs usable as a preamp.

The associated dynamic-range plots read 131.0-131.1 dB per channel, while the specification table lists both S/N ratio and dynamic range as 131 dB and channel crosstalk as -136 dB(A). The balanced headphone output is specified at up to 131 dB S/N ratio and -133 dB crosstalk, with 7.08 W per channel into 32 ohms. The specification table gives 20 Hz-20 kHz response within ±0.6 dB and 20 Hz-40 kHz within ±2 dB, so its entire audible-band response is tightly controlled. These are exceptionally strong claimed results, but no independent third-party bench measurement of this model was found as of this review. The score therefore treats the manufacturer-only data conservatively rather than assuming that production units necessarily reproduce the published plots.

Digital receiver and Bluetooth functions use third-party chips (XMOS XU-316, AK4118, and Qualcomm QCC5125), an appropriate contemporary choice for those functions. The score recognizes the recent proprietary converter, in-house design ownership, and demonstrated engineering depth; no product-specific patent or evidence of a multi-year technical lead is documented.

The 299 USD TOPPING DX5 II is the closest substantially cheaper candidate found: its manufacturer DAC figures include <0.00006% THD+N and 133 dB S/N ratio and dynamic range, while it also provides PEQ, crossfeed, Bluetooth, headphone outputs, and XLR/RCA preamplifier outputs [3][4].

The DX5 II nevertheless accepts only USB, optical, coaxial, and Bluetooth sources; it lacks the DX9 Discrete’s AES and I²S inputs as well as its second optical and coaxial inputs. Its balanced output is also rated at 6.4 W per channel into 32 ohms (<1% THD+N), below the DX9 Discrete’s 7.08 W per channel under the same load [1][4]. Output-only USB digital interfaces do not replace the missing input paths. No lower-priced finished product or verified accessory bundle was found that both closes these connectivity gaps and retains equivalent-or-better documented DAC and headphone-amplifier performance. The DX9 Discrete is therefore the cheapest identified option with the complete function and performance set, so its cost-performance score is 1.0.

Reliability & Support

The TOPPING DX9 Discrete carries a 1-year manufacturer warranty [5]. TOPPING provides escalation through its own support channel in addition to an international authorized-dealer network, and firmware maintenance has continued through version V0.37, released July 7, 2026 to fix a display blackout after extended standby [6]. No statistical failure-rate data is available for this model. One customer review on the official store reports occasional severe headphone-output spikes when powering off, but a single report cannot establish incidence or whether the issue is systemic [1].

Rationality of Design Philosophy

TOPPING’s direction is measurement-focused, and this generation makes real user-facing progress: compared with the original DX9, the stated DAC THD+N improves from <0.00007% to <0.00006%, crosstalk from -125 dB to -136 dB, and PEQ plus crossfeed are added [1][2]. Combining those DSP functions and eight digital inputs with a powerful headphone amplifier is rational functional integration, while the proprietary converter is a genuinely innovative implementation. However, the manufacturer also attributes lifelike, immersive, and more dynamic sound to the PSRM and I/V circuits without controlled evidence that those circuit substitutions are audibly superior. At 1,299 USD, part of the price also pays for the discrete implementation, relay volume control, displays, glass panel, and chassis, none of which by itself establishes audibly higher fidelity. The extra connectivity and DSP are nevertheless concrete user benefits, so the design direction remains strongly rational once the unsupported audibility claims are separated from its measured and functional advances.

Advice

The DX9 Discrete is most compelling when AES and I²S inputs, duplicate optical and coaxial inputs, high headphone power, PEQ, and crossfeed must coexist in one unit. Buyers who only need USB, one optical input, one coaxial input, and Bluetooth should compare the substantially cheaper DX5 II, which covers the core playback, DSP, preamplifier, and headphone functions with similar manufacturer-stated DAC metrics, although its 32-ohm output is lower [3][4]. No independent bench test of the DX9 Discrete was found, and the 1-year warranty [5] plus the isolated shutdown-spike report [1] warrant caution for buyers prioritizing verified performance and long-term risk.
