Product Review
Zoom R24
A discontinued, battery-powered production workstation combining 24-track playback, eight-track recording, an 8-in/2-out USB interface, DAW control, and pad sampling. Its unusually broad workflow remains inexpensive on the used market, but third-party analog-loopback measurements reveal substantial distortion and current Mac driver support is limited.
Overview
The Zoom R24 is a discontinued, battery-powered production workstation. It records eight tracks simultaneously and plays 24 tracks from SD card, provides eight XLR/TRS inputs (six with switchable 24/48V phantom power), works as an 8-in/2-out USB audio interface, emulates Mackie Control for DAW operation, and includes a pad sampler/rhythm machine [2]. The current price basis for this review is the lowest active US used listing found in the surveyed market: 249 USD, with nine used units shown as available through the same marketplace [3].
Scientific Validity
\[\Large \text{0.3}\]The available independent RMAA result is an external analog loopback test from the R24’s line output to line input at 24-bit/44.1kHz using the Zoom ASIO driver [1]. It therefore represents the complete analog output/input path, not an isolated test of the microphone preamps, ADC, DAC, or headphone output.
The result reports 0.080% THD, -59.4dB A-weighted THD+noise (about 0.107%), 0.060% IMD+noise, -95.4dB A-weighted noise level, 95.0dB dynamic range, and -81.1dB stereo crosstalk. Frequency response is +0.39/-0.59dB from 40Hz to 15kHz, widening to roughly -2.10/+0.39dB across 20Hz-20kHz. The published swept-tone graph is especially concerning: its reported left/right IMD rises from about 9.25-9.35% at 5kHz to 21.65-21.80% at 10kHz and 33.24-33.50% at 15kHz. Noise, dynamic range, and crosstalk are usable, but the distortion results prevent the R24 from qualifying as a high-fidelity interface.
Technology Level
\[\Large \text{0.4}\]Against current production tools, the R24’s 24-bit/48kHz ceiling, USB 2.0 8-in/2-out interface, DSP effects, Mackie Control emulation, SD recording, and sample pads are mature technologies [2]. Their integration was ambitious for a portable unit, but the underlying functions are now widely reproducible with standard converters, DSPs, storage controllers, and control protocols. The product page and support materials identify no R24-specific patented architecture or exclusive component that would create a durable technical barrier. The design remains useful as a compact workflow, but it is no longer technically advanced.
Cost-Performance
\[\Large \text{1.0}\]The price denominator is 249 USD, the lowest active US used offer found at review time [3]. The essential package is eight combo inputs, eight-track simultaneous standalone recording with 24-track playback, battery operation, an 8-in/2-out USB interface, DAW control, and pad sampling [2].
The closest current finished alternative found was the TASCAM Model 12. It records 12 tracks at 24-bit/48kHz, functions as a 12-in/10-out USB interface, and provides DAW control [4], but its current US retail price is 599 USD [5]. It also does not replace the R24’s battery-powered operation and pad-sampler workflow. Products below the R24’s used price that were surveyed did not combine the required input count, standalone multitrack recording, USB multichannel interface, DAW control, and sampler in one finished unit. No cheaper package with the complete function set and confirmed equal-or-better measured performance was identified.
Reliability & Support
\[\Large \text{0.4}\]The current purchase basis is used, so the original North American one-year warranty, which was limited to the original purchaser, does not cover the reviewed offer [6]. Zoom still hosts the manual, firmware 1.13, and Windows 10/11 drivers [7]. However, the current Mac driver listed for the R24 covers only macOS 10.14 through 13, leaving the listed driver without coverage for more recent macOS releases. The live download page is useful, but discontinued status, absence of manufacturer warranty for the used offer, and limited current Mac compatibility weaken long-term support. No statistical failure-rate dataset, recall, or model-wide service bulletin was found, so unknown hardware failure incidence is treated neutrally; used buyers should evaluate the individual unit’s controls, display, jacks, power supply, SD slot, and USB connection.
Rationality of Design Philosophy
\[\Large \text{0.7}\]The R24 is organized around a coherent goal: let a small group record, edit, mix, trigger samples, and later control a DAW with one portable device [2]. Battery power and SD recording directly support location and rehearsal work, while the shared faders, inputs, DSP, storage, and USB connection reduce duplicated hardware. Spending the enclosure and control surface on workflow rather than cosmetic luxury is sensible. The trade-off is equally clear: combining many roles in one unit makes partial redundancy and incremental replacement difficult. The concept remains rational for portability and integration, while the dense all-in-one architecture sacrifices modular upgrade flexibility.
Advice
The R24 remains attractive when one used purchase must cover computer-free multitrack recording, DAW control, and sampling, especially for rehearsals or portable production. Buyers focused on clean conversion should not overlook the measured full-path distortion, and Mac users should verify driver compatibility before purchase. Because every available unit is now used, test all eight inputs, phantom power, faders and transport keys, display, SD recording, USB audio, battery operation, and the supplied power adapter before committing.
